Space Architecture at ICES 2012

As more nations and private enterprises prepare to send more people into space, the “right stuff” astronaut paradigm for space travelers is quickly becoming a relic of history.  Space travel cannot remain a heroic test of human endurance.  The architectural principles that provide for comfortable lodging, productive work, and enjoyment of life on Earth must be brought to bear in the design of facilities beyond Earth, in full recognition of the technical challenges presented by the environment.

Papers for Space Architecture (ICES 502) should present theory, technical developments, and progress in the architectural design of  •  space-related facilities, habitats, and vehicles to promote the health,comfort, and productivity of people living and working in space  •  ground-related facilities, habitats and vehicles that relate to or support the space field in some relevant way.

Abstract:

The abstract should be a single text-only paragraph of about 300 to 500 words that provides a synopsis of the problem statement, research methods, and conclusions, without figures or external references.  An initial abstract must be submitted on-line through the ICES web site at http://www.aiaa.org/events/ices/.

In addition, the SATC encourages prospective authors to e-mail a longer extended abstract to the session organizer (Ondřej Doule).  This should be a more complete summary of the proposed paper, possibly with a paragraph for each major section.  Figures and a reference list are especially encouraged.

The abstract can and should be revised as the final paper develops.

Peer Review:

All papers must pass peer review before being accepted for publication and presentation.  Acceptance is not assured.  Drafts for peer review must be complete papers.  They must present original work.  They must support claims with evidence and refer to precedent studies.  The writing must be clear English, free of spelling and grammatical errors.

Authors must consider the deadline in planning the scope of the paper – especially for work in progress.  Results must be documented (and if necessary, cleared for release) before submitting the draft for peer review.

ICES enforces a strict “no paper, no podium” policy.

Formatting:

Papers must conform to the AIAA template, available for download from http://www.aiaa.org/content.cfm?pageid=396

We encourage authors to download the template and use it at the outset of their writing to avoid significant reformatting later.

Presentation:

Authors of accepted papers must register for the conference, attend the session, and present their work in person.  No podium, no paper.
