Subject

Permanent Habitat on Mars in 2020

Task

Creating a habitat that will be able to provide an acceptable living environment for a hundred people on the planet Mars.

  • How can a microenvironment be created? One complex should house all the functions which are necessary to sustain a hundred people who can not be directly dependant on help from the Earth.

  • How can an acceptable living quarters be created within the technical and financial limitations imposed by the Martian environment?

  • Which construction and function aspects can be applied when we take the reduced gravity and atmospheric pressure into consideration?

  • Which materials and construction techniques can be used for this habitat?

Purpose

To design a habitat that will create a viable environment on the planet Mars, where the architecture is guided by technical, social and financial aspects. Architecture integrates technical and social aspects to create viable surroundings for the occupants of the habitat.

Relevance

Microenvironments are necessary when the location or the purpose of the people present require it. Submarines, bunkers, arctic bases and even gated cities are examples of such microenvironments. Architectural, technical, functional and social advances that are developed in these innovative environments usually find their way into the world of everyday and so benefit everybody.
