BACKGROUND

Marlies is a researcher and entrepreneur with her main research focus on:
* Compact and sustainable design solutions for extreme terrestrial and extra-terrestrial environments
* In-situ resource utilization (ISRU) for in-space construction and construction with composite materials
* Positive synergies between Earth and space research and development

She gained professional experience as a researcher in Space Architecture and Infrastructure at the European Space Agency (ESA), where she was a member of the highly multidisciplinary “Advanced Concepts Team”. Marlies was the initiator and study lead of a highly successful ESA Ariadna study on ISRU, materials development and in-space construction with geopolymers. She was part of an ESA expert team collaborating with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics on conceptualizing and designing infrastructure and habitats for future human exploration missions. In addition, Marlies is a co-editor of the “Acta Futura” Journal of ESA. In 2019 she initiated and organized the “Interstellar Exploration Workshop” at the European Space Technology Research Center (ESTEC). Marlies was a ESA CDF expert team member on the project “HYBE: Crewed deep space mission design”, investigating the effects of astronaut hibernation and torpor on mission design. She was an external consultant for the development of an analog habitat design (MaMBA) at ZARM Bremen.

In 2016, Marlies won the 2016 “Best Student Paper Award” of the Space Architecture Technical Committee (SATC) of the AIAA with the paper “Design of a Human Settlement on Mars, Using In-Situ Resources”, based on her master’s thesis.

Currently, Marlies is an entrepreneur in the IRISE Consortium, working on the development of a new technology, manufacturing inflatable, rigidizable, composite elements in space.
