Mirpuri Foundation Looks to Future with Sponsorship of Prestigious Space Architecture Awards

The Mirpuri Foundation is happy to announce its sponsorship of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics’ (AIAA) Space Architecture Technical Committee Research Paper Awards.

Advancing aeronautical research is one of the founding pillars of the Mirpuri Foundation, while the AIAA, which has over 30,000 members worldwide, is a professional society for aerospace engineers. It is also the US representative on the International Astronautical Federation and the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences.

The Mirpuri Foundation now announces a collaboration with the AIAA’s Space Architecture Technical Committee, providing a grant for the best annual professional and student published research papers.

The 2020 Best Paper Awards solicit and recognize excellence in research in Space Architecture, the theory and practice of designing and building inhabited environments in outer space. The emerging field of space architecture seeks to better the human condition through the design of the built environment on space and on earth and supporting the design and building of a sustainable future in the solar system.

Winners will be announced in November in Las Vegas at the AIAA Ascend Conference, where a trophy and certificate will be presented to the best entrants.

Speaking at the announcement of the sponsorship deal, Paulo Mirpuri, President of the Mirpuri Foundation, said: “The Mirpuri Foundation is happy and excited to have the opportunity to support these prestigious AIAA awards.

“Aeronautical research is one of the founding pillars of the Mirpuri Foundation and the AIAA Space Architecture Technical Committee Awards attract the very highest caliber of entry.

“The bar is very high and the standard is such that the AIAA competitions genuinely drive scientific thinking forward.

“This year’s competition offers an excellent environment for testing the systems that are needed for extended exploration missions to other destinations, like, for example, Mars.

“The research will complement much of the work that we already do in our areas of interest.”

“SATC is thrilled that the Mirpuri Foundation will now sponsor our annual Space Architecture Best Paper awards,” said Dr. Olga Bannova, SATC Chair. “Recognizing and celebrating excellence in research is vital as we build this new field, and we are pleased to have a partner in this endeavor.

These papers give important insights that can be applied not only to advancing human spaceflight, but also to find better design solutions for Earth.”

“Part of our mission at the Space Architecture Technical Committee is to empower a young generation to pursue educational and research opportunities to advance sustainable human-centered design for space and extreme environments on Earth,” continued Dr. Bannova.

The AIAA currently has over 6,500 student members in 160 active student branches, including 12 foreign student branches. It is devoted to the education of both practicing and future aerospace professionals and numerous scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students.

The Mirpuri Foundation award is the first sponsored Space Architecture Best Paper Award in the world.
